San Diego Road Conditions & Traffic Resources
Before you head out on a long San Diego County drive — especially east on I-8 toward the desert, north on I-15 through the back-country, or anywhere on SR-78 or SR-94 in unsettled weather — check current road conditions. A two-minute look at the right tool can save you from sitting in a four-hour closure or driving into a fire detour.
Caltrans QuickMap
Caltrans QuickMap is the single most useful tool for California road conditions. It shows real-time freeway speeds, lane closures, construction, chain controls, CHP-reported incidents, and live camera feeds for hundreds of locations across the state, including all major San Diego freeways. It is free, runs in any browser, and has a mobile app. Search "Caltrans QuickMap" to find it.
511 San Diego
Dial 511 from any San Diego County phone to reach the regional 511 system. It provides:
- Current freeway travel times for I-5, I-8, I-15, I-805, SR-52, SR-54, SR-56, SR-78, SR-94, SR-125, and SR-163
- Transit information for MTS and NCTD
- Carpool and vanpool matching
- Construction and incident alerts
The 511sd.com website provides the same information visually, with maps and live cameras.
CHP Traffic Incident Information
The California Highway Patrol publishes a public Traffic Incident Information Page that lists every active CHP incident in real time, organized by communication center. The San Diego center covers all county freeways and state highways. You can see exactly where collisions, disabled vehicles, debris, and pursuits are unfolding, with timestamps. Search "CHP traffic incidents San Diego" to find it.
Caltrans District 11
Caltrans District 11 is the regional Caltrans office covering San Diego and Imperial counties. Their website publishes planned construction schedules, long-term closures, and major project updates. Useful when you need to know about a multi-day overnight closure on the I-5 or a SR-78 paving project before it ruins your commute.
SANDAG
The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is the regional planning agency. Their website is less useful for day-to-day traffic but is the authoritative source for long-range information about highway expansion, transit projects, and corridor studies. If you want to know what's planned for the I-5 North Coast widening or the Mid-Coast Trolley extension, SANDAG is the place.
Freeway-specific watchpoints
- I-8 east of El Cajon can close suddenly for snow, ice, or wildfire. Check QuickMap before any winter trip toward Pine Valley, Boulevard, or Imperial County.
- I-15 through the Cajon Pass and Temecula Valley routinely backs up afternoons and on Sunday evenings.
- SR-94 and SR-78 in the back-country often have rockfall, wildlife, and seasonal closures.
- I-5 through downtown has frequent overnight construction closures.
